The government of Yemen has confirmed that it will attend the next round of consultations on Yemen in Sweden, Mukhtar al-Rahbi, an adviser to the Yemeni minister of information and former press secretary to the country's president, told Sputnik on Tuesday.
MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th November, 2018) The government of Yemen has confirmed that it will attend the next round of consultations on Yemen in Sweden, Mukhtar al-Rahbi, an adviser to the Yemeni minister of information and former press secretary to the country's president, told Sputnik on Tuesday.
UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths announced on Saturday that both the Yemeni government and the delegation of the Houthi rebel movement, also referred to as Ansar Allah, were committed to attending the consultations on Yemen.
"The Yemeni government has agreed to go to consultations in Sweden and the legitimate Yemeni government has no problem in holding consultations to end the war in Yemen," al-Rahbi said.
Al-Rahbi added that the exact date of the upcoming consultations would be announced on November 29-30.
In September, the United Nations attempted to hold peace talks between Yemen's warring parties in Geneva, but the Houthi rebels said they were prevented from leaving Yemen. The Saudi-led coalition denied these allegations and some of its members stated that the Houthi delegation had deliberately declined to attend to undermine the peace settlement process in the country.
Yemen has been gripped by a civil war between President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi's government and the Shiite Houthi movement since 2015. The government is backed by the Saudi-led coalition that has been carrying out airstrikes that target areas controlled by the Houthis since March 2015.
