Zelenskiy Capable of Steering Ukraine in Right Direction - UK Politician

Ukraine's future president Volodymyr Zelenskiy is capable of leading the country in the right direction, but he should be careful of whom he trusts, Richard Wood, a member of the Brexit Party, told Sputnik on Monday

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd April, 2019) Ukraine's future president Volodymyr Zelenskiy is capable of leading the country in the right direction, but he should be careful of whom he trusts, Richard Wood, a member of the Brexit Party, told Sputnik on Monday.

Zelenskiy is winning the Ukrainian presidential race with the record 73.21 percent, the country's Central Election Commission said earlier in the day after 99 percent of the ballots have been counted. He competed against incumbent President Petro Poroshenko in the runoff held on Sunday.

"Congratulations to the new president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy. I am delighted that the people of Ukraine have overwhelmingly decided to elect a new president who ... can put Ukraine on the right path ... I really think that if he is careful about who he trusts he will make a good president," Wood said.

The UK politician stressed that Zelenskiy must be very careful with the offers of the West, "as for every penny they loan him they will want guarantees to force their agendas on him." Wood also suggested that Zelenskiy should "put the people first" and be wary of the European Union.

"My message to ... Zelenskiy is: Gather people around you who are like minded, who will tell the truth, avoid professional politicians and civil servants. Build a close working relationship with your neighbours and keep your focus. Do not lose sight of the direction you have to go. Be guided by the people who gave you their support and earn their respect," Wood said.

The Brexit party was set up earlier this year. It has 14 members of the European Parliament, who were elected as members of the UK Independence Party.
