Zimbabwe Leader Files Plea Against Opposition's Suit Contesting Elections Results - Lawyer

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa filed a plea against the lawsuit of the opposition MDC Alliance challenging the results of the July 30 elections, the president's lawyer, Lewis Uriri, said on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th August, 2018) Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa filed a plea against the lawsuit of the opposition MDC Alliance challenging the results of the July 30 elections, the president's lawyer, Lewis Uriri, said on Wednesday.

On Friday, the MDC Alliance, the main opposition coalition in Zimbabwe, led by Nelson Chamiza, has filed a case in Zimbabwe's Constitutional Court disputing the countrys general election result. In connection with the claim, Mnangagwa's inauguration was postponed.

"We have filed our opposing papers," Uriri said, as quoted by the Herald Zimbabwe newspaper.

He added that lawyers of opposition leader Nelson Chamiza are expected to deliver their documents to the court before Friday.

Once preliminary results for the July 30 presidential and parliamentary elections were released, the MDC Alliance claimed that the results had been manipulated by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC). Opposition supporters took to the streets of Harare to protest the results. Six activists were killed during the protest.

The MDC Alliance secured 64 out of 210 seats in the National Assembly, and its candidate, Chamisa, came second in the presidential race with 44.3 percent of the vote. The ruling Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) secured an absolute majority in the National Assembly with 144 seats and the partys candidate, Emmerson Mnangagwa, was named the country's president.
