Bahadur Shah Zafar Poetry

Bahadur Shah Zafar is known as the last mogul emperor of India. He was the second son of Akbar II and became the emperor after his death. After the attack of the British Army, he, his wife, and his three sons were arrested. His wife and his son were beheaded in front of him. He was arrested after several charges and was supposed to be killed, but later, he was exiled to Burma. People often name it his carelessness as a king because he was not that good of a leader, and he could not handle the duties of an emperor.

He was a Sufi poet often named Pir, having several pupils under his education. Although he was a royal prince, he lived as a poor scholar and upright dervish. The actual name was Bahadur Shah II Mirza Abu ‘Zafar’ Siraj-ud-din Muhammad. He chose Zafar as his pen name.

Bahadur Shah Zafar had knowledge and wisdom like any other Islamic scholar. He appeared as an indigent advisor and a master of different languages. His sensitive poetry reflected the rulers of the Mughal empire. His poetry showed a deep sense of pity for those emperors and humans. The poetic mentor of Bahadur Shah Zafar was Naseer and Zauq, and after the death of Zauq, he took several pieces of advice from Ghalib.

Some famous critics believed that his poetry was not written by himself but copied from his mentors because of their similarity in pattern and tone. But the modern literates cannot say so because the tone and aura of his poetry do not match his mentors' style. Zafar has given us a collection of ghazals in four volumes which sums up his life rules and ideologies.

As a Mughal Prince, he was not interested in politics but rather in religion, art, and poetry. From an early age, he had a deep interest in poetry, spiritualism, and calligraphy. He grew up with a deep interest in poetry, music, spiritualism, and calligraphy. He was a master calligrapher, and he sent many copies of the handwritten Quran to different mosques of Delhi.

Poetic style

A large part of his poetry reflects his unawareness of state affairs and his non-existent capability of being a king. As a king, he just wanted peace and ruled the empire as a helpless king. British Army later conquered his empire in 1857. As a result, he was exiled from his birthplace. A lot of his poems show mourning, loss, and suffering of prison. He wrote small verses of poems and ghazals in a rhythmic tone. Much of his work was lost in the war of 1857, but some were saved and later compiled.

Poetic collection

His saved pieces were gathered in a collection that shows his Sufi mysticism and a style characteristic of his poetry. His poetry collection named “Kulliyat-i-Zafar” was compiled after his death and is still famous worldwide. This collection has many poems and ghazals, and it inspires many poetry lovers.

Many plays and TV shows portrayed Bahadur Shah Zafar in their story. In a play called 1857: Ek Safarnama, he was presented as a king. In the movie Lal Qilla, he was again showcased as an extremist. Some of his poetic work was also used in many plays and movies.
