Ali Sardar Jafri was born on 29 November 1913. He was a creative and versatile writer. He is a poet, critic and a film lyricist. He had born in a well-born family in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh where he spent his formative years. With the publication of his first collection of short stories ‘Manzil’, he started his literary career. ‘Parvaz’ was the first collection of his poems which was published in 1944. The first conference of the progressive writers’ movement in Lucknow was presided over by him in 1936. He became the co-editor of the ‘Naya adab’ which is a literary journal devoted to the progressive writers’ movement and it continued to be published until 1949.

He has been involved in several social, political and literary movements. On organizing a progressive Urdu writers’ conference, he was arrested at Bhiwandi. Despite the warnings of the Chief Minister of Bombay state, Morarji Desai, he was rearrested after three months.

Dharti k laal and Pardesi are his important works as lyricist. His eighty poetry collections were published between 1948 and 1978. These include Nai Duniya Ko Salaam, Khoon Ki Lakeer, Amn Ka Sitara, Asia Jaag Utha and lahu pukarta hai. His last enthology entitled Sarhad was carried by Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his bus journey to Lahore in 1999. The prime minister has invited Jafri as well to accompany him on his trip but because of his ill health he could not do so. Sarhad is also an audio album which was dedicated to the Indo-Pakistan amity produced by squadron leader Anil Sehgal. It was composed and sung by the ‘bulbul-e-kashmir’ Seema Anil segal.

He made a history by presenting Sarhad as national gift to then Prime minister of Pakistan Nawaz sharif while the historic Lahore summit in 1999. It was the milestone of his life.
