ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 18th Jun, 2026) A two-day free medical camp organised by the OIC Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) commenced on Thursday in a remote village in the Cholistan region of Fort Abbas.
The camp is being organised in a remote village Chak 283/HR in Fort Abbas region through collaborative efforts of Patient and Child Welfare Association, Fort Abbas and Government of Punjab.
The camp is aimed at providing healthcare services to residents of underserved desert communities located near the Pakistan-India border.
Assistant Commissioner Fort, Abbas Areej Ali Haider Gondal inaugurated the camp in the presence of COMSTECH Adviser Prof Dr M. Riaz Khan, representatives of local elected leadership, community elders and health professionals.
According to organisers, around 700 patients received medical consultations and medicines on the opening day.
More than 250 patients suffering from eye-related ailments were provided medicines and prescription glasses free of cost.
The camp is offering services in cardiology, gynaecology, dermatology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, physiotherapy, ENT and general medicine through a team of 15 specialist doctors and healthcare professionals.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr Gondal appreciated the selection of a remote Cholistan locality for the initiative and stressed the importance of extending healthcare services to populations with limited access to medical facilities.
Prof Dr. M. Riaz Khan said the initiative reflected COMSTECH’s commitment to improving access to healthcare in underserved areas. He noted that the programme was launched under the vision of COMSTECH Coordinator General Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary to bring quality healthcare services closer to disadvantaged communities.
COMSTECH focal person for the camp, Shabbir Hussain Ludharh said adequate stocks of medicines had been arranged and all services were being provided free of charge. He added that similar outreach programmes would continue in other underserved regions.
The organisers expect approximately 1,500 people to benefit from the two-day camp. Medical consultations, medicines, basic diagnostic services and referrals for further treatment are being provided to patients attending the facility.
At the conclusion of the opening ceremony, certificates of appreciation were distributed among doctors, volunteers and members of the organising team.
Local residents welcomed the initiative and expressed hope that similar healthcare interventions would continue in the region.
