LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 25th july, 2016) : There is a dire need to use insect-protected and herbicide-tolerant corn seeds to boost the corn farms productivity. This is also important to encourage local and international investment in Pakistan's agricultural sector, said M Afzal Executive Director Croplife while talking to APP here on Monday. He said that Croplife was a non-profit organization working to boost crops productivity. He said, "We should continue to use all tools at our disposal, including biotechnology, to improve Pakistan farmers' lives and we meet the community's expectations of producing quality food and fiber in a safe and sustainable way.
" He said that estimates indicate the world's population was set to eclipse nine billion inhabitants by the year 2050.
Meanwhile, Asia alone is projected to have one billion more people. Afzal said that in the year 2015 'Agriculture value-added per worker' figures for Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Australia, the Netherlands and USA were US$ 1773, 1103, 743, 59,179, 78,141 and 78,224 respectively. These figures illustrate that the countries using latest growing techniques were yielding more produce, he said. He said that Increase in the Return on Investment (ROI) for growers was key to improve rural economies and provide enough food for national needs.
