Thousands of IIOJK political prisoners facing illegal detention, isolation in jails

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 8th Sep, 2026) Thousands of Kashmiris, including Hurriyat leaders, activists, youth, and women, continue to face illegal detention under draconian laws, the Public Safety Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, in jails of India and occupied Jammu and Kashmir without trial.

A report released by Kashmir Media Service stated that over three thousand political detainees, including Hurriyat leaders, have been facing illegal detention in jails of India and the occupied territory for demanding their inalienable right to self-determination and raising their voices against the atrocities in the territory.

Most of these detainees, including youth and women, the report added, have been slapped with draconian laws and have been kept in complete isolation in jails.

Among these detainees, some are residents of Azad Jammu and Kashmir who had mistakenly crossed over the Line of Control (LoC) on different occasions. It has been learnt that as part of the BJP-RSS regime’s vindictive policy, more Hurriyat leaders, activists and youth have been shifted from IIOJK to far-off jails inside India. The cruel move, the report said, is aimed at breaking their commitment to the ongoing freedom movement as well as hurting the families of the detainees emotionally and financially.
