BB Shaheed Int'l Tourney Sees Thrilling Contests

ISLAMABAD, Dec 9 (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 09th Dec, 2016 ) : Top seed Aqeel Khan, Shahzad Khan, Ahmed Chaudhry and Muzammil Murtaza moved into the semifinals of Men's Singles by beating their respective opponents on Friday in the Second Benazir Bhutto (Shaheed) International Tennis Tournament here at Islamabad Tennis Complex, G-5.

Top junior player of Pakistan and seventh seed Muzammil Murtaza caused a major upset in the Men's Singles quarterfinal when he eliminated second seed Muhammad Abid in well contested three-set match.

In the first set Muhammad Abid displayed his powerful forehand stroke and with the help of strong serve broke fourth and sixth game of Muzammil. In the second set Muzammil Murtaza fought back strongly and won it in the same fashion by breaking third and fifth game of Abid and levelled the score 1-1 set all.

In the final set Muzammil did not allow his opponent to settle down and displayed his supremacy in all the area and without conceding a single game won the final set and match 1-6, 6-2 6-0. The match lasted for two hours and fifteen minutes.

Another fine match of the day was between fourth seed Shahzad Khan and sixth seed Mudassar Murmtaza. In the first set both players displayed aggressive and powerful game by hitting big serve and ground stroke when score reached 3-3 all, Mudassar Murtaza broke the seventh game of Shahzad and won the set at 6-3.

In the second set both players were again in aggressive mood. At one stage Mudassar Murtaza was leading 4-1 and it was looking that he will easily win the match but Shahzad fought back bravely and levelled the score 4-4 all by breaking seventh game of Mudassar.

The score reached 6-6 game all as both the players held their respective serves. In the tie break Mudassar Murtraza again took the decisive lead 6-0. On match point he missed easy overhead close to net, from here Shahzad Khan played very consistent game and displaying serve volley and won the next seven points and took the set 7-6(6).

In the final set both players again took start in assertive manner but Shahzad Khan took the revenge of first set in the same manner and won the match 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-3. The match lasted for two hours and 40 minutes.

Third seed Ushna Suhail qualified for the Ladies Singles final when she eliminated second seed Sarah Mahboob in straight set match 6-4 6-0. Muhammad Abid and Usman Rafiq made the major upset in the Men's Doubles event by eliminating top seed Aqeel Khan and Heera Ashiq in a straight set match 6-4 6-3.
