Pakistan’s natural resources hold potential to transform economy: Iftikhar Malik

LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 27th Jul, 2025) SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry former President Iftikhar Ali Malik has said that Pakistan is richly endowed with natural resources, including the world’s fifth-largest gold and copper reserves in Reko Diq, the second-largest salt mines in Khewra, extensive mineral deposits, and vast coal reserves in Thar, all of which can fulfill the country’s energy needs for generations.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, he said that Almighty Allah has blessed Pakistan with an abundance of natural wealth such as coal, copper, gold, natural gas, minerals, and fertile agricultural land. “If properly harnessed, these resources can revolutionize Pakistan’s economy and significantly improve the quality of life, particularly for the underprivileged segments of society,” he noted.

He pointed out the country’s significant potential for clean energy generation, especially through hydropower from rivers like the Indus. “By fully exploiting our natural resources, Pakistan can achieve sustainable development, reduce poverty, and emerge as a prosperous and respected nation in the global community,” he added.

“It is not only an economic imperative but also a moral responsibility to ensure that these resources benefit all citizens, especially the downtrodden.”

He emphasized that mismanagement, lack of strategic planning, and insufficient investment have historically hampered the optimal use of these assets. “If managed effectively, our natural resources can reduce dependence on foreign loans, create employment opportunities, and drive industrial growth,” he asserted.

He noted that the mining sector alone has the potential to attract billions of Dollars in investment, while Pakistan’s vast agricultural base, supported by one of the world’s largest irrigation systems, can ensure national food security and enhance exports.

He urged the government to implement transparent policies, adopt modern technologies, and foster foreign partnerships to fully tap into the country’s resource potential. “Revenue generated from these sectors must be reinvested in public welfare, particularly education, healthcare, and infrastructure, to uplift the marginalized,” he added.
