ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 29th August, 2016) : Senate Standing Committee on Water and Power on Monday expressed its concern over weak electricity transmission system in the country, hampering efforts to meet gap between supply and demand. An official of Water and Power Ministry told the committee that if electricity was supplied according to demand, the transmission system would not be able to bear the load. Distribution companies lacked the infrastructure to bear the full load of power supply, he added. Senator Nauman Wazir said there was no mechanism in the country to provide information about supply and demand of electricity. Power distribution companies were conveying their demand by keeping the weather in view, he added.
The Water and Power ministry officials gave a detailed briefing on the dam projects in Balochistan, power losses in Sindh and problem of low voltage in Chitral. Chief Engineer Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) informed the committee that the government was taking steps to stop electricity theft and the drive was producing positive results. The meeting of the committee was held under the chairmanship of Senator Sardar Yaqoob Nasir and it was attended by Senators Nauman Wazir, Ghous Muhammad Khan Niazi, Taj Haider, Muhammad Zafarullah Dhandla, Mukhtiar Dhamrah, Daud Khan Achakzai, Nisar Muhammad and senior officials of the Ministry of Water and Power and power distribution companies.
