The number of prisoners in the penal colony located in the Russian city of Omsk who were injured in a mass fight on October 6 has increased to 39 following complete medical examinations, Irina Kasyanova, the Omsk Region's human rights commissioner, told reporters on Thursday.
NOVOSIBIRSK (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 11th October, 2018) The number of prisoners in the penal colony located in the Russian city of Omsk who were injured in a mass fight on October 6 has increased to 39 following complete medical examinations, Irina Kasyanova, the Omsk Region's human rights commissioner, told reporters on Thursday.
Earlier, a representative of the region's department of the Russian Investigative Committee, said that over 20 people had been injured.
"Four prisoners are currently receiving treatment in a Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) hospital. One [prisoner] is in a city hospital, he has come around after having been taken to the intensive care department. When his health condition allows, he will be transported to the FSIN hospital as well. A total of 34 people are receiving ambulatory treatment in the colony," Kasyanova said.
She went on to say that the number of injured people had increased after a full medical examination.
According to the FSIN's Omsk department, a group of prisoners tried to incite other prisoners to rebellion on October 6, resulting in a fight.
A criminal case has been initiated under the article of the Russian Criminal Code concerning "disorganization of the activity of institutions providing isolation from society."
The Omsk region's prosecution has launched a review of legal compliance in the colony.
This is just the most recent scandal around Russian penal colonies. In late August, over a dozen FSIN employees were detained for beating prisoners. This prompted the FSIN to create a special commission tasked with investigating all cases involving the use of force in prisons.
