ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 12th Jul, 2025) Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education, Senator Bushra Anjum Butt on Saturday called for the integration of 'reproductive health' and societal taboos into the national curriculum, stressing the urgent need to equip young students, particularly girls with the necessary knowledge and understanding of these important issues before
marriage.
In a recent conversation with a local news channel, Senator Bushra Anjum Butt praised PPP Senator Quratulain Marri for presenting the bill on 'reproductive health education', adding, some senators had raised concerns, highlighting the need for further discussion and unity.
She stressed the importance of finding common ground to ensure the bill's passage, as it aims to empower the youth with critical knowledge and awareness.
Senator Butt urged lawmakers to set aside cultural sensitivities and societal taboos in order to unite behind the proposed bill.
She stressed that addressing these issues openly is essential for creating an informed and empowered generation.
According to Butt, this legislation is key to equipping young people with the knowledge they need to make responsible and well-informed decisions about their lives.
In addition, Senator Butt reiterated the importance of including discussions on reproductive health and societal taboos in school curricula.
Senator Bushra Anjum Butt emphasized that such education would prepare students to face the challenges ahead, ensuring they are not left vulnerable or relying on misinformation from unreliable sources. By fostering an open dialogue, Butt believes the bill will help break down harmful stigmas and provide young people with the tools to navigate adulthood confidently, she added.
She said, “I will engage in discussions and work towards building consensus and hopefully all lawmakers will come to a common understanding on this issue, adding, If not, I am prepared to hold public hearings to gather advice and insights, as this is an urgent need of the hour."
She further added, “We must have an open discussion to bring clarity on the matter, and I am also ready to address any concerns my fellow colleagues may have regarding this important bill."
Answering a query, she replied, "we will also discuss the content monitoring and ensure that the syllabus is age-appropriate for students.
It is essential that the material is suitable for their level of understanding while still addressing the key issues effectively," she concluded.
