WhatsApp replaces windows app with web wrapper amid users’ concerns

WhatsApp Windows app earlier was specifically designed for the platform, offers better performance and full feature support

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-July 26th, 2025) Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp, known for supporting a wide range of operating systems including Android, iPadOS, iOS, macOS, wearOS, and Windows, has recently made a significant change to its Windows application by replacing it with a web wrapper version.

Previously, the WhatsApp Windows app was specifically designed for the platform, offering better performance and full feature support. However, the latest beta version of WhatsApp indicates that the app has now been converted into a web wrapper—essentially functioning as a browser-based version of WhatsApp within an app shell.

While WhatsApp has not officially clarified the reason for this transition, tech experts suggest that using a web wrapper could simplify the development process for the company. With a single code base shared across platforms, it becomes easier for developers to roll out new features instead of maintaining multiple platform-specific versions.

Due to this change, the notifications and performance on the Windows version are expected to differ from the original native app.

Although some additional features from the web version may now be available on Windows, the overall user experience has reportedly declined.

Many users expressed dissatisfaction with the update, claiming the new web-based version consumes significantly more RAM and system resources—up to 30% more memory usage compared to the earlier Windows version.

This, in turn, negatively impacted system performance.

The users also criticized the new design and called it less professional and less suited for desktop use.

Even Meta has acknowledged a shortcoming of the updated version and admitted that the web wrapper is slower than the native Windows app it replaced.
