30th death anniversary of hockey legend Munawwar uz Zaman observed

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th Jul, 2025) The 30th death anniversary of legendary field hockey player Munawwar uz Zaman was observed on Monday.

He was born on July 2, 1951 in Lahore,a private news channel reported.

Zaman was part of Pakistan’s golden era of hockey.

He represented the country in two Olympics, helping the national team win a silver medal in 1972 and a bronze in 1976.

He also played a vital role in Pakistan’s victories in multiple Asian Games and Champions Trophy tournaments.

He scored 44 goals in 119 international appearances, a rare feat for a defender. After retirement, he served as coach of the national side, including during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

He passed away from a cardiac arrest on July 28, 1994, in Karachi during a veterans' practice session. He was posthumously awarded the Pride of Performance in 1997.
