SARGODHA, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 27th Jul, 2025) Commissioner Jahanzaib Awan has directed immediate steps for the restoration and transformation of the historic Ghalib Library, calling it a vital part of the city’s intellectual and cultural heritage.
During a visit to the library located in Company Bagh here on Sunday, the commissioner emphasized the importance of aligning the library with modern needs while preserving its historical identity.
He stressed the need for consultations with students, citizens, literary figures, and youth to ensure an inclusive and community-driven approach.
Jahanzaib Awan also instructed that a public opinion survey be conducted through social media, and recommendations be collected at the institutional level. Accompanied by Professor Habib ur Rehman from the University of Sargodha’s History Department, Chief Officer MC Majid bin Ahmad, and Municipal Officer Zoya Baloch, the Commissioner was briefed on the library’s origins and current condition.
The briefing revealed that the library was founded in 1908 by a scholar named Rudkin, who donated 150 books to initiate the “Public Library.
”
Later, in honor of the centenary of Mirza Ghalib, it was renamed Ghalib Library. At present, the library houses around 3,000 books across various subjects and has a similar number of registered members, though the number of active readers is steadily declining.
Calling the library “not just a repository of knowledge but a cultural treasure,” Commissioner Jahanzaib Awan highlighted the enduring value of physical books even in the digital era. “We must reconnect the younger generation with this literary heritage through an effective strategy,” he added.
He instructed the Chief Officer of Municipal Corporation to immediately engage with scholars, writers, educationists, and literary circles of the city to gather actionable suggestions.
The Commissioner also emphasized consultation with all public and private educational institutions, including the University of Sargodha, to transform the library into a vibrant hub for academic and research activities.
A comprehensive report on the transformation plan is to be submitted within a week.
