Kashmir Martyrs Day: a testament to the region's unwavering struggle for freedom

MIRPUR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 12th Jul, 2025) Tomorrow, July 13, marks the 94th anniversary of Kashmir Martyrs' Day, a day of great significance for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. On this day in 1931, 22 Kashmiris laid down their lives in front of Srinagar's Central Jail, protesting against the autocratic Dogra regime's brutalities. The event sparked a wave of resistance against Indian occupation, which continues till now.

The Kashmir Martyrs' Day, or Youm-e-Shuhada-e-Kashmir, is observed annually on July 13 to pay homage to the martyrs who fought against the despotic Dogra rulers. The day is a reminder of the region's tumultuous past, marked by brutal treatment, slave labor, heavy taxes, and state terror. The 1931 incident, where Dogra troops opened fire on protesters, killing 22 Kashmiris, became a turning point in the region's struggle for freedom.

In this regard, people in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and around the world will observe the day with special prayers, symposiums, and rallies. In AJK, a state holiday has been declared to facilitate participation in events marking the day, the local correspondent of APP reported this from Mirpur on Saturday.

In Indian-occupied Kashmir, a complete shutter-down strike will be observed against the forced and illegal Indian occupation. The day will also be marked by visits to the graveyards of the martyrs, special prayer meetings, and seminars to pay rich tributes to the Kashmiri martyrs.
