Health authorities in Rawalpindi have started an important three-day polio vaccination campaign targeting specific areas in the city, known as drainage union councils, to fight the spread of Wild Polio Virus Type 1 (WPV1) and tackle ongoing positive environmental samples

RAWALPINDI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th Jul, 2025) Health authorities in Rawalpindi have started an important three-day polio vaccination campaign targeting specific areas in the city, known as drainage union councils, to fight the spread of Wild Polio Virus Type 1 (WPV1) and tackle ongoing positive environmental samples.

Starting on Monday, vaccination teams started visiting door-to-door to give the oral polio vaccine to every child under five years old in these high-risk areas. The campaign aims to vaccinate about 1,68,312 children across 25 union councils.

Dr. Ehsan Ghani, CEO Health, Rawalpindi, highlighted the importance of this effort.

"This vaccination drive is critical to protect children from this disabling disease by ensuring every child gets the oral polio vaccine (OPV) drops to boost their immunity", he said.

The campaign covers union councils in three areas: Rawalpindi Cantt areas including CTR-1, CTR-17, CTR-2, CTR-3, CTR-4, and CTR-5, city areas including U.C NO. 10, U.C NO. 11, U.C NO. 3, U.C NO. 37, U.C NO. 4, U.C NO. 5, U.C NO. 6, U.C NO. 7, U.C NO. 8, and U.C NO. 9), and Taxila including CTT-2, CTT-1, CTW-2, CTW-6, Jalala, khurum paracha, Mohra Shah Wali, Sarai Kala, and Wah.

According to Dr. Waqar, the spokesman District Health Authority, tests have repeatedly found polio virus in sewage samples from these areas, making this campaign essential.

"Health officials are asking the public to make sure all eligible children are vaccinated, to work closely with the polio teams, and to report any children who might have been missed", he said.
