DAMASCUS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) Damascus has strongly condemned the United States for its flagrant interference in Venezuela's internal affairs, calling Washington's actions a serious violation of international law, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
On Tuesday, the opposition-led Venezuelan National Assembly declared incumbent President Nicolas Maduro a usurper. The following day, National Assembly leader Juan Guaido declared himself the country's acting president. The move was acclaimed by the United States, which urged Maduro to step down and officially recognized Guaido as the country's interim leader.
"The Syrian Foreign Ministry strongly condemns the US administration's flagrant interference in Venezuela's internal affairs, which constitutes a gross violation of international law and an open [act of] aggression against Venezuela's sovereignty," the statement read.
The ministry stressed that Washington's destructive policy and their defiance of international law were the main reasons for tensions around the world.
Damascus also conveyed its solidarity with the Venezuela's legitimate authorities and people, and expressed confidence that the country would foil the US "plot."
Meanwhile, Venezuela has also been dealing with nationwide rallies that erupted early this week, with people protesting both Maduro's government and attempts to oust him. Maduro, in turn, has called the opposition leader a US puppet and announced that Caracas had severed diplomatic relations with Washington.
