DPM/FM Dar to embark on key US visit later this month

Pakistan will host a second signature event on July 24, which will focus on role of the United Nations and regional organizations, particularly Organization of Islamic Countries

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-July 18th, 2025) Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is set to undertake an important visit to the United States later this month, diplomatic sources confirmed.

Initially scheduled for July 20–25, the visit has now been extended to the end of July due to pressing official engagements. The tour will begin with Dar’s address on July 21 at a high-level political forum in New York, organized under the United Nations to review the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The forum runs from July 14 to 24 and is considered the UN’s main platform for evaluating progress on global development goals.

As President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Pakistan will also host key “signature events.” Ishaq Dar is expected to preside over and address a high-level open debate at the Security Council focusing on the role of multilateralism in promoting global peace, security, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

While the exact themes of Dar’s address have not been publicly disclosed, the visit comes at a sensitive time. Tensions remain high following India’s baseless accusations against Pakistan and its unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty — a clear violation of international norms. Additionally, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and instability in the middle East are expected to figure in the discussions.

The significance of the signature debate is underscored by the participation of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who is also scheduled to address the session.

Pakistan will host a second signature event on July 24, which will focus on the role of the United Nations and regional organizations, particularly the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Ishaq Dar will also chair this session.

In addition, the foreign minister will attend a rescheduled high-level conference on Palestine in New York, which is being co-organized by Saudi Arabia and France.

The conference was originally planned for June 17–20 but was postponed due to regional instability following Israeli and US military actions against Iran, which had led to airspace restrictions across the region.

The conference will now take place on July 28–29 and will focus on post-war reconstruction efforts in Gaza. Dar’s address at the event is expected to be significant, especially in light of ongoing European efforts — including by France — to formally recognize the State of Palestine. However, diplomatic sources note that pressure from key UNSC members may cause France to withhold a formal recognition announcement at this time.

During his US visit, Foreign Minister Dar is also expected to meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and General Assembly President Dennis Francis, as well as foreign ministers and permanent representatives of various countries at the UN.

A visit to Washington is also likely, where he is expected to hold important meetings with US officials.

Dar’s visit comes at a time when Pakistan-US relations have shown signs of improvement under the current government. Talks are underway on various strategic matters, including cooperation on critical mineral resources.

Pakistan currently holds the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month — a position of significant diplomatic weight. The country was elected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC in June 2024, securing 182 out of 193 votes.

The Security Council comprises five permanent members — the US, Russia, China, France and the UK — and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.

Pakistan has served as a non-permanent member seven times before, most recently during 2012–2013.
