Brave fire rescuer Nazim Hussain Shah laid to rest

Fire Rescuer Syed Nazim Hussain Shah, who embraced martyrdom while saving lives

during a fire and rescue operation.

He was laid to rest with full state honours in his hometown, Mohalla Siddiqa, Begumpura, Lahore,

in the presence of senior officers, colleagues, loved ones, and a large number of citizens.

Secretary Emergency Services Department Dr Rizwan Naseer paid glowing tribute to the martyred rescuer, saying that brave individuals like Syed Nazim Hussain Shah are the pride of the nation. He added that the sacrifices of such selfless rescuers would never be forgotten, and the families who raised them deserve the nation’s utmost respect. “Rescuers are true heroes who risk their lives to protect others, and for this they are respected around the world,” he said.

On 10th July, a major fire broke out in a plastic godown located in Khokhar Town on Band Road, Lahore. Upon receiving the emergency call, the Emergency Command & Control Centre immediately dispatched a fire and rescue team, which responded promptly and brought the fire under control through professional firefighting efforts. However, during the post-fire cooling process, the two-storey warehouse suddenly collapsed.

Several rescuers were trapped under the debris, including Fire Rescuer Syed Nazim Hussain Shah, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Muhammad Shoaib, Lead Fire Rescuers Tayyab and Mazhar, Fire and DERT Rescuer Jahangir, and EMT Tajammul. All were pulled from the rubble and shifted to the hospital, but Fire Rescuer Nazim Hussain remained missing. A vigorous search and rescue operation was launched, and eventually his body was recovered, he had already embraced martyrdom.

EMT Muhammad Shoaib, a resident of Shahdara, Lahore, also succumbed to his injuries and embraced martyrdom in the hospital.

The funeral prayer for Syed Nazim Hussain Shah was held in Begumpura and was attended by Divisional Emergency Officer Dr Fawad Shahzad Mirza, District Emergency Officer Lahore Shahid Waheed, Deputy Director Operations Dr Rizwan Chaudhry, Emergency Officers Inayat Baloch and Muhammad Azam, Rescue Tehsil Officers, Station Coordinators, the martyr’s family, and a large number of fellow citizens.

Following the funeral rites, floral wreaths were laid on behalf of Punjab Emergency Service, and the national flag and Rescue 1122 uniform were presented to the family of the martyred rescuer by Dr Fawad Shahzad, as a symbol of honour, sacrifice, and state gratitude.
