Pakistan In Climate Emergency Due To Human Actions: Climate Change Expert

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Jul, 2025) Climate change expert Dr. Zainab Naeem on Thursday warned that Pakistan is facing a climate emergency caused by decades of human negligence, rapid urbanization, and environmental mismanagement.
Talking to a private news channel, she pointed out that rising temperatures and extreme weather patterns are already affecting cities like Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and areas in northern Pakistan, including Chilas.
“This year, Islamabad may not show 40°C on the scale, but it feels like 51–52°C due to humidity,” she noted, adding that cities are overheating due to deforestation, rapid urbanization, and concrete infrastructure replacing natural landscapes.
The biggest reason for flooding in Rawalpindi and Islamabad is not heavy rain but seasonal changes and blocked natural waterways, she added.
She stressed that the unchecked dumping of construction waste and encroachments on rivers are worsening drought and flooding.
While acknowledging progress made in Pakistan’s climate action over the past decade, she said that due to the climate emergency, we must bring the real estate and construction industry into our planning process.
She said that improved urban planning and better infrastructure tailored to climate resilience are the need of the hour.
“Newly planted trees cannot replace old ones overnight. It takes years. We need long-term vision and immediate action,” she added.
