PML-N's Hafiz Abdul Karim wins Senate seat from Punjab with 243 votes

Presiding officer announces Hafiz Abdul Karim as winner with 243 votes while Opposition candidate Mehar Abdul Sattar could get 99 votes

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-July 21st, 2025) Hafiz Abdul Karim of Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadit, the candidate of ruling PML-N, secured victory in the Senate election from Punjab Assembly as he bagged 243 votes on Monday.

The polling began at 9:00am and continued until 4:00pm for one vacant Senate seat.

Chief Whip Rana Arshad served as the polling agent for the PML-N candidate while Rana Shehbaz represented the opposition.

The polling process was overseen by Punjab’s Provincial Election Commissioner Sharifullah, who served as the presiding officer.

Following the completion of vote counting, the presiding officer announced that Hafiz Abdul Karim had won the seat with 243 votes. Opposition candidate Mehar Abdul Sattar received 99 votes.

Out of 368 eligible voters, 345 votes were cast, with 3 votes rejected. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also participated in the voting.

The final results would be officially notified by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The Punjab Assembly has a total strength of 371 members, with two seats currently unoccupied. Therefore, 369 lawmakers are eligible to cast their votes in the ongoing election.

Party-wise breakdown of assembly is as follows:

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) holds 229 seats

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has 16 seats

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) controls 11 seats

Pakistan Muslim League-Zia (PML-Z) has one seat

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) commands 27 votes

Sunni Ittehad Council has 76 members

Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) have one vote each

Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) possesses 7 seats.
