MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th January, 2019) At least eight UN peacekeepers died Sunday in a terrorist attack on a base in the village of Aguelhok in northern Mali, the UN stabilization mission in the country, MINUSMA, said.
"The provisional death toll stands at eight blue helmets who fell in combat, numerous others have been injured.
The wounded have been evacuated to hospitals," the statement reads.
Militants on armored vehicles attacked the base in the Kidal region early in the morning. The peacekeepers repelled the attack. UN's aerial forces are scouting the area from above.
UN chief's special representative for Mali, Mahamat Saleh, condemned militants for "sowing chaos" and called on all stakeholders in the Sahel region to deal with the threat of terrorism.
