Havana is certain that Moscow will maintain its supportive position toward Cuba, despite new US sanctions against the Latin American country, Cuban Ambassador to Russia Gerardo Penalver Portal said on Thursday
"Russia has always held a consistent position toward removing sanctions [from Cuba] and we are certain that Russia will continue to maintain its stance on opposing sanctions and protecting international law.
We value Moscow's position greatly," the ambassador told journalists.
On Wednesday, US National Security Adviser John Bolton announced a series of new sanctions against Cuba that virtually end all non-family travel to Cuba and place new limits on the money Cuban Americans can send to family on the island. On Thursday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said the US sanctions against Russia's strategic Latin American partner were "unlawful and illegitimate."
