Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has appointed fellow Republican Congresswoman Martha McSally to take the place of Senator John McCain, who died in August, Ducey's office said in a press release on Tuesday.
"Governor Doug Ducey today announced the appointment of US Representative Martha McSally (AZ-02) to the United States Senate, following the resignation of US Senator Jon Kyl," the release said.
McSally ran for Arizona's other US Senate seat in November but lost to her Democratic opponent. Her appointment comes after the person who had been serving in McCain's seat, Arizona Senator Jon Kyl, decided to step down after only three months on the job.
"I am humbled and grateful to have this opportunity to serve and be a voice for all Arizonans," McSally said in the release.
Arizona will now hold an election for a new US Senator to fill McCain's former seat in 2020.
