MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th January, 2019) US State Secretary Mike Pompeo has called on the Gulf Cooperation Council to unite their efforts in counteracting Iran's "destabilizing activity" in the region during his talks with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in Doha, State Department Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino said in a statement on Sunday.
Pompeo arrived in Doha earlier in the day from Abu Dhabi, where he traveled as part of his middle East tour. Saudi Arabia will be the secretary's next stop.
"The Secretary emphasized the importance of a united Gulf Cooperation Council in standing against the Iranian regime's destabilizing activity and ensuring the success of the alliance in advancing prosperity, security, and stability in the region," the statement read.
Pompeo and al-Thani also discussed a number of regional issues, including the fight against terrorism and achieving lasting peace in Syria and Afghanistan, according to the statement.
