UN Official Visiting Kazakhstan To Assess Human Rights, Counterterrorism Laws - Statement

The human rights and counterterrorism will visit Kazakhstan on May 10 to 17 to assess the impact of human rights and counterterrorism laws in the country, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said in a press release on Thursday
"The United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights and counter-terrorism, Fionnuala Ni Aolain, will visit Kazakhstan for the first time from 10 to 17 May to assess the impact on human rights of counter-terrorism practices and laws," the release said.
The Special Rapporteur will meet with high-level officials, including lawmakers and law enforcement officials, as she reviews legislative acts to ensure that Kazakhstan government's measures are in compliance with international human rights, the release said.
In addition to visiting Kazakhstan's capital Nur-Sultan, the Special Rapporteur will visit other cities in the country such as Almaty, the release said.
The Special Rapporteur will visit detention facilities to interview people suspected or convicted of terrorist or extremist crimes, the release said.
