The US government has increased funding for programs to end human trafficking and slavery to $75 million at a United Nations gathering it co-hosted with the United Kingdom, Department of State spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a readout on Monday.
WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th September, 2018) The US government has increased funding for programs to end human trafficking and slavery to $75 million at a United Nations gathering it co-hosted with the United Kingdom, Department of State spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a readout on Monday.
"[Deputy Secretary of State John J.] Sullivan announced additional US funds to support the Department of State's Program to End Modern Slavery (PEMS), bringing the Department's total investment for this important program to $75 million," Nauert said.
Sullivan co-hosted the event on the margins of the UN General Assembly entitled "Stepping up Action to End Forced Labor, Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking" with UK Secretary of State for International Development Penny Mordaunt and six other nations, the readout explained.
"Sullivan announced on behalf of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK Principles to Guide Government Action to Combat Human Trafficking in Global Supply Chains, a framework... to prevent human trafficking in public and private sector supply chains," Nauert said.
Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Canada and Nigeria also participated in the initiative, the readout added.
