MEXICO CITY (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th March, 2019) The Venezuelan government confirmed in a statement on Monday that the country's diplomatic representation offices in the United States had been illegally taken over by opposition members.
On Monday, Carlos Vecchio, Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido's envoy to the United States, said that opposition had taken control of three diplomatic facilities in the United States and would attempt to obtain further US-based assets in the near future.
"The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela informs the international community that its diplomatic premises in the United States have been forcibly seized by people who enjoy official support of the US government and act as its agents in its political interests and in the direct violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations," the statement, released by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza on his Twitter account, read.
The Venezuelan government has also demanded that Washington respect its legal obligations and take measures to reverse the diplomatic offices illegal seizure.
The confrontation between the United States and Venezuela further escalated this year, when on January 23, Guaido, the speaker of opposition-led National Assembly, declared himself to be acting Venezuelan president, and the Unites States, as well as its allies around the world, immediately recognized him.
Russia, China, Mexico, Turkey and several other countries continue to recognize Nicolas Maduro as Venezuela's legitimate leader.
