NP Punjab President Ayub Malik condemns honour killings in Balochistan, urges strong Govt action

Ayub Malik, President of the National Party’s Punjab chapter, has strongly condemned the recent killing of a couple in Balochistan reportedly in the name of honour, calling it a “heinous crime” that exposes a dangerous culture of impunity

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Jul, 2025) Ayub Malik, President of the National Party’s Punjab chapter, has strongly condemned the recent killing of a couple in Balochistan reportedly in the name of honour, calling it a “heinous crime” that exposes a dangerous culture of impunity.

In a statement issued on Monday, Malik expressed deep concern that the incident occurred weeks ago, yet authorities remained passive. “The way the couple was executed clearly indicates that there is a rule of jungle in parts of Balochistan, and it also shows that the culprits have a strong sense of impunity,” he said.

He demanded that all those involved in the killings be immediately arrested and brought to justice under the law. Malik also urged the government to enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling that declared the traditional Jirga system illegal, noting that such parallel justice systems often enable gross human rights violations.

Highlighting the misuse of legal provisions, Malik warned against allowing the culprits to escape accountability under blood money laws.

“In many such cases, the law is manipulated or the perpetrators are pardoned. No such invocation should be allowed here because it would strengthen their sense of impunity, making women more vulnerable in our society,” he stated.

He further criticized attempts by some quarters in Punjab to use the tragedy as a means to malign the Baloch national movement. “Honour killings are not limited to any one province or ethnic group. This is a national issue rooted in a deeply entrenched patriarchal system that affects women across Pakistan.”

Malik emphasized that lasting change can only come through dismantling patriarchy. “If we truly want to protect women and uphold their rights, we must challenge and dismantle the social structures and attitudes that enable such violence,” he concluded.

The National Party leader’s statement comes amid growing national outrage over the murder of the young couple, with civil society groups and human rights activists also calling for urgent legal reforms and strict enforcement of existing protections.
