KIEV (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th March, 2019) The Canadian government has extended the work of the UNIFIER military training mission in Ukraine for three years, Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported on Monday.

According to the ministry, Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan announced the extension of the mission during a phone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Stepan Poltorak.

"The minister of national defense of Canada stressed that the government of Canada decided to extend the term of the UNIFIER mission in Ukraine for a period of three years," the ministry said.

In 2015, Canada first sent 200 personnel to Ukraine under Operation UNIFIER to provide training and capacity-building assistance to the country's military forces. In March 2017, Ottawa extended its military training mission in Ukraine through the end of March 2019. An additional 50 Canadian servicemen have arrived in Ukraine to train the country's troops as part of the UNIFIER mission in early 2018.
