The euro area imported more goods from Russia than it sold in the first nine months of 2018, figures published Thursday by its statistics agency showed.

Eurostat's press release indicated that EU exports to Russia edged down 0.8 percent in January-September 2018, to 63.4 billion Euros ($71.7 bln). They stood at 63.

EU imports from the eastern neighbor were up 15.1 percent, rising from 108.3 billion euros to 124.6 billion. This indicates a negative balance for the euro area in an overall positive international trend.

The euro area recorded a 13.1-billion-euro surplus in trade in goods with the rest of the world in September 2018, compared with a surplus of 25.3 billion in September 2017.
