SEOUL, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Apr, 2018 ) :President Moon Jae-in on Monday called for effective measure to improve public safety as the country marked the fourth anniversary of the deadly sinking of the Sewol ferry.
Moon made the call during a meeting with his top secretaries, citing a recent survey that found a majority of citizens believe the country's disaster response system is not much different from what it used to be when the ferry sank, leaving 299 passengers dead and five missing.
"We have to remind ourselves again that a way to truly commemorate the victims of the ferry disaster is to build a safe Republic of Korea," Moon said. "The reason why we have designated today as the day for citizens' safety is to show that citizens are sorry for the children (victimized in the disaster) and to keep our promise to never forget them and definitely make the Republic of Korea a safe country," he added.
Moon then instructed his aides to craft measure to enhance public safety that can gain "public support and recognition" based on the outcome of the recent two-month state inspection of public facilities across the country.
The ferry sank in waters off the country's southwestern island of Jindo on April 16, 2014. The victims were mostly teenagers on a school trip to the southern resort island of Jeju. Noting that the day for disabled people is this Friday, the president directed his secretaries to ensure that his policy efforts -- such as ensuring stable incomes for the disabled and enabling their smooth assimilation into local communities proceed well.
