MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd February, 2019) The investigation into the case of Paul Whelan, currently being held in custody in Russia on suspicion of espionage, has been extended until May 28, Whelan's attorney Vladimir Zherebenkov told Sputnik on Friday.
"The term of the investigation was extended until May 28," Zherebenkov said.
Earlier in the week, the prosecution asked the Lefortovo Court of Moscow to extend Whelan's arrest, with the motion having been granted by the court.
Whelan, who holds Canadian, Irish, UK and US citizenship, was detained in Moscow in December on charges of espionage. He has denied the charges and insisted that he had come to Russia to attend a friend's wedding. The suspect faces sentence of up to 20 years if convicted.
