MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st August, 2018) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Saudi Ambassador in Moscow Rayed Khalid Krimly on Monday discussed pressing middle Eastern issues and reiterated their commitment to enhancing multifaceted bilateral cooperation, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
"The officials discussed topical Middle East issues with an emphasis on the developments in Syria, Yemen and the Persian Gulf. They reaffirmed Moscow and Riyadhs mutual intention to further promote multifaceted Russian-Saudi ties, including maintaining an active political dialogue," the ministry said in a statement.
Along with the involvement in the Yemen conflict as the leader of the coalition of mostly Persian Gulf nations, which carries out airstrikes against the Houthis at the request of Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, Riyadh, as a regional power, has its own interest in the Syrian crisis settlement. The country, among other things, assists the US-led coalition against the Islamic State (IS, outlawed in Russia) terror group. Last week, for instance, the State Department welcomed the country's $100-million contribution to the coalition-supported "stabilization efforts in areas liberated from ISIS [IS] in Syria."
