MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th November, 2018) As many as six people died and five others were injured during protests across Haiti over suspected embezzlement of funds of Venezuelan PetroCaribe program that provided the country with discounted oil, local media reported, citing police.
National police said around 20 people were arrested in nationwide protests that erupted on Sunday, while the organizers of the demonstrations reported about 11 killed, 45 wounded and 75 arrested, according to Le Nouvelliste newspaper.
Similar demonstrations took place in Haiti last month with protesters demanding transparency from the authorities regarding the alleged misuse of $3.8 billion in the oil program to sell low-cost crude oil to the Caribbean countries, launched in 2005.
President of Haiti Jovenel Moise has already promised to investigate the suspected misuse of funds from the Venezuela-sponsored oil assistance program.
