DAMASCUS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th December, 2018) Around 600-700 Syrian refugees who were forced to flee to Jordan from the war in Syria return to their homeland via the Nassib checkpoint every day, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry's center for Syrian reconciliation, Col. Igor Fedorov, said.
"About 600-700 Syrians return through the Nassib checkpoint located on [Syria's] border with Jordan every day. A total of over 33,500 people have passed through the checkpoint since its opening," Fedorov told reporters.
The spokesman added that the Russian center had opened a first-aid station at the crossing and organized the work of guard posts.
In 2015, the Nassib border crossing was captured by terrorists, and the Syrian government was able to regain control over the checkpoint only in July, 2018. In mid-October, the crossing was reopened for civilians and transit transport.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry's Center for the Reception, Allocation and Accommodation of Refugees, a total of 63,797 refugees have returned to Syria from abroad since July 18. Another 673,414 refugees are believed to be still in Jordan.
