Sugar trade deadlock continues as supply remains suspended in Lahore, other cities

Sugar Dealers Association says dealers were still unable to purchase sugar at government-fixed ex-mill rate of Rs165 per kilogram, resulting in ongoing suspension of sugar supply in markets

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-July 29th, 2025) The dispute between sugar dealers and mill owners over sugar procurement remains unresolved, causing a continued disruption in market supply.

The Sugar Dealers Association said that the dealers were still unable to purchase sugar at the government-fixed ex-mill rate of Rs165 per kilogram, resulting in the ongoing suspension of sugar supply in markets.

Association leader Sohail Malik alleged that sugar mill owners, in coordination with the ministry, exported large quantities of sugar and made billions in profits. However, amid the current sugar crisis, only dealers are being held responsible.

He further stated that many dealers have now gone into hiding, while sugar mill owners are avoiding direct comment on the situation.

Sources within the sugar industry claim there is no shortage of stock, and the government is already aware of their stance.

Despite the government setting the ex-mill price at Rs165 and the retail price at Rs173 per kilogram, affordable sugar remains unavailable to the public.

After Lahore and Islamabad, sugar has now become scarce in Karachi and other cities as well.

In areas where sugar is available, it is being sold at rates as high as Rs200 per kilogram.
