Arab League Still Divided On Subject Of Syria's Readmission To Bloc - Secretary-General

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 17th April, 2019) The League of Arab States (LAS) is still divided on the subject whether to readmit Syria back into it ranks, LAS Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit told Sputnik on Tuesday.
"The talks that we had today and tonight did not expose anything new neither in Russia's, nor in the Arab countries' position [on the subject of Syria]. There is a rift in the Arab world. Some want Syria back [in LAS] and others are discussing the conditions on which Syria should be allowed to return to its former position," Gheit said.
LAS suspended Syria's membership in the bloc in 2011 over the eruption of the civil conflict in the country. During LAS' annual summit in Tunisia in March, the league's spokesman, Mahmoud Afifi, said that Syria's return had not been formally proposed within the organization. This February, Gheit said that in order for Syria, one of LAS' founding members, to return to the bloc, a consensus must be reached within the league.
