Relations between Hungary and Ukraine are heading toward rapprochement after a period of tensions between the two neighboring countries, Hungarian Ambassador to Ukraine Istvan Ijgyarto said on Wednesday
"We have a complicated year behind us, but what starts as difficult, as a rule, ends well. And now we are seeing positive changes in the Hungarian-Ukrainian relations," Ijgyarto said at a meeting with Governor of Ukraine's Zakarpattia Oblast Hennadiy Moskal, as quoted in a statement put out by the governor's office.
Relations between the two countries, which deteriorated over the 2017 Ukrainian education law, worsened further in September over reports that the Hungarian consulate in Beherove near the Hungarian border issued Hungarian passports to Ukrainian citizens.
Ukraine said Hungary issued passports knowing that Kiev does not recognize dual citizenship and expelled the Hungarian consul from the country, prompting Budapest to respond in kind.
