The Chinese Foreign Ministry summoned on Saturday Canadian Ambassador to Beijing John McCallum to express protest over the detention of Meng Wanzhou, the financial director for Chinese telecom giant Huawei, the ministry said in a statement.

Meng is facing fraud charges in the United States with which Canada has an extradition treaty.

The official was arrested on December 1 in Vancouver to be handed over to the US side.

"China's Vice Foreign Minister Le Yuchen summoned urgently on Saturday the Canadian ambassador to Beijing to express strong protest and make a submission over the detention of the Huawei financial director in Canada," the statement said.

The Chinese side warned Canada of "serious consequences" in case Meng was not released, the statement added.
