ADDIS ABABA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 10th February, 2019) The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) will work to promote peace and security measures within the country after a change in leadership, Felix Tshisekedi, the recently elected DRC president, said on Sunday.
"The change of leadership equally ushers in a new era based on this democratic achievement, and so relentlessly we need to further consolidate the peace and security that we have achieved and also to build a country that promotes rule of law and ..
. put an end to the armed groups that are wreaking havoc in some parts of our country, particularly in [the cities of] Beni and Butembo in northeast of our country," Tshisekedi said at the 32nd African Union Summit, which is currently underway in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.
Tshisekedi, the leader of DRC opposition party Union for Democracy and Social Progress, was elected as the new DRC president having won the December 2018 election. He thus replaced Joseph Kabila, who ruled the country for 19 years.
