EU Parliament's Resolution on Nord Stream 2 Pipeline Part of Political Pressure - Novak

The European Parliament's resolution calling for cancellation of construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is not something new, but is par of the political pressure exerted on participants of the project, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak told reporters on Thursday.

BREST (Belarus) (UrduPoint news / Sputnik - 13th December, 2018) The European Parliament's resolution calling for cancellation of construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is not something new, but is par of the political pressure exerted on participants of the project, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak told reporters on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the European Parliament passed a resolution calling the Nord Stream 2 construction a political project and urging its cancellation.

"We have many times heard that from some opponents of this project. Today this is not something new, it is, from my point of view, political pressure on participants of the project.

The project continues to be implemented," Novak said.

Nord Stream 2 is a joint venture of Russia's Gazprom with France's Engie, Austria's OMV AG, UK-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell, and Germany's Uniper and Wintershall. It aims to deliver 55 billion cubic meters (some 2 trillion cubic feet) of Russian natural gas a year to the European Union through the Baltic Sea bypassing Ukraine.

The pipeline project has been welcomed by some countries in Europe and opposed by a number of others, including Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic States, while the United States has also expressed its opposition.
