MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th September, 2018) France welcomes the latest decision of Moscow and Ankara on creation of a demilitarization buffer zone in Syria's province of Idlib, French Ambassador to Russia Sylvie Bermann told Sputnik on Tuesday.
During a Monday meeting in the Russian resort city of Sochi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to set up a demilitarized zone in Idlib by October 15.
"Yes, we consider this a positive step, but not a final one for Idlib. We must move on to an early political settlement," Bermann said.
The peace talks in Sochi and Geneva on the Syrian crisis settlement must be continued, according to the ambassador.
"The conflict in Idlib should not be resolved through a military operation. There must be stability and security. The most important thing is to reach a comprehensive agreement, as it happened earlier at the talks in Sochi, Geneva. We must continue the dialogue," Bermann added.
Idlib province is the last major stronghold of rebel and Islamic terrorist groups which have tried to overthrow the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad. On Monday, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said there would be no military operation against armed opposition in Idlib.
