US Senator Chuck Grassley announced in a statement on Friday that he will step down as a chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and will assume the role chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.
"Looking ahead, at the Finance Committee, I want to continue to work to make sure as many Americans as possible get to experience this good economy for themselves," Grassley said in the statement.
Grassley said he is familiar with the workings of the Finance Committee because he served as its chairman in 2001 and again from 2003-2007.
Grassley noted he was also ranking member of the Finance Committee from 2001-2003 and 2007-2011.
US media reported that Grassley's departure from the Judiciary Committee will pave the way for South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham to take over this post in the new Congress.
