Haddad to stand in for Lula in Brazil presidential race: party official

Curitiba, Brazil, Sept 11 (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 12th Sep, 2018 ) :Brazil's jailed ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has formally abandoned his presidential bid, and his running mate Fernando Haddad will replace him on the ballot in October, a Workers Party official said Tuesday.

"The decision has been made," the official told AFP.

Hundreds of militants meanwhile gathered around the jail where Lula has been held since April for corruption, awaiting the reading of a letter from the ex-leader anointing Haddad as his political heir.
