BAGHDAD (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th March, 2019) The Iraqi parliament approved the dismissal of the governor of the northern Nineveh province, where a recent deadly ferry accident left more than 100 people killed, a source in the parliament told Sputnik on Sunday.
"The Council of Representatives of Iraq approved the dismissal of Nineveh governor Nofal al-Akoub and his two deputies at the request of the prime minister," the source said.
A tourist ferry with dozens of people aboard capsized in the Tigris River in Mosul earlier on Thursday. According to preliminary data, the accident might have been caused by the excessive number of passengers. The second possible cause for the accident is the increased water level in the Tigris River provoked by the opening of floodgates in the Mosul Dam.
The Iraqi authorities have launched an investigation against al-Akoub in connection with the ferry crash.
