MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th November, 2018) Mexican Government refuted on Wednesday the allegations that incumbent President Enrique Pena Nieto and his Cabinet has taken bribes from the Sinaloa drug cartel.
Earlier in the day, the trial of suspected Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has begun at the Brooklyncourt in the United States as he is accused of drug trafficking. His lawyer Jeffrey Lichtman told the jury that Guzman has not been a de facto leader of the cartel, claiming that Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada is the real leader, who has managed to escape prison because he had bribed the entire Mexican government, including Pena Nieto.
"The government of Enrique Pena Nieto pursued, caught and extradited the criminal Joaquin Guzman Loera. The statements attributed to his lawyer are completely false and slanderous, " Sanchez wrote on Twitter.
Guzman faces a possible life sentence in the United States over 17 criminal counts. He was extradited by the Mexican authorities to the United States in January, 2017.
