Mexico Expects Venezuela Talks in Norway to Succeed - Deputy Foreign Minister

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 06th June, 2019) Mexico expects the four-step Montevideo mechanism on Venezuelan reconciliation to succeed with support of Norway, the deputy secretary of foreign affairs of Mexico, Martha Delgado, told Sputnik on Wednesday.

Since May, Norway has hosted two rounds of talks between the representatives of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and opposition.

"We took the first step named the 'Montevideo mechanism,' and now we see that Norway is making an effort, which we endorse and deeply respect, and we expect this initiative to succeed," Delgado said.

She stressed that Mexico takes a neutral stance on Venezuela and is prepared to act as a mediator in its political crisis.

In February, Mexico, Uruguay and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) states initiated the so-called Montevideo mechanism to resolve the crisis in Venezuela through four steps: immediate launch of a dialogue between the dispute parties, continuous negotiations process, drafting of an agreement and its subsequent implementation.

Russia has endorsed the Montevideo mechanism.

On May 17, the opposition leader, Juan Guaido, has denounced the Oslo talks, saying they are not formal negotiations but a mere attempt by Norway to act as a mediator, something many others have tried to do before.

Venezuela entered a turbulent political crisis after Guaido proclaimed himself interim president in January. Several countries, including the United States, have endorsed him as Venezuela's leader and urged Maduro to step down. Maduro, in turn, has accused the United States of attempting to orchestrate a coup in the country and bring Guaido to power. Russia, China, Turkey, and several other countries have continued to recognize Maduro as the legitimate Venezuelan leader.
